If you have been following us on social media you’ll know that we love hummus! Its a great source of plant based protein that goes really well with carrots, cucumber, peppers or even broccoli to make a snack which fills you up, gives you long lasting energy and it is healthy!
However, you’ll also know if you’ve bought hummus before that if you leave it open for a day it goes rancid. That is because the supermarket products often contain vegetable oils that easily oxidise and turn into trans fat – a toxic fat that is very damaging for us. By making your own however you can:
- Pick your own ingredients so you can put in something better like olive oil which will not oxidise so easily! Read more here about oils and why this is important!
- Save money – making your own is far cheaper with one pot of chickpeas (60p) making around two tubs of hummus.
- And it’s easy!
Here is our recipe for making a solid hummus in 15 minutes:
Ingredients:
- 1 can of chickpeas
- tahini
- lemon
- olive oil
- salt and additional spices such as garlic, paprika or harissa.
- Open and rinse chickpeas.
- Boil in water until soft (5-10 minutes).
- Pour chickpeas into a sieve but catch some of the water in a bowl/cup below.
- Pour the cooked chickpeas into a food processor and add half a squeezed lemon, 4 tablespoons of tahini, plenty of olive oil, a pinch of salt and optional extra flavourings like garlic, paprika or our personal favourite is harissa spices.
- Whiz it up for a few minutes until its a smooth paste and add in some of the previously kept water/more oil if you need to make it smoother.
